Biggar and District Men’s Shed

Men’s Shed is an organisation that was started in Australia some 20 years in an effort to address the imbalance in health outcomes between men and women. In particular the movement sought to stem the tide of male suicide in remote communities. Such was the success of the Sheds that the idea has gone worldwide and has been enthusiastically adopted in the U.K. to tackle social isolation particularly among men.

Biggar Community Action Group

Biggar Community Action Group began in March 2020 and was set up to respond to the Coronavirus crisis in our community. Members of Biggar Community Council, WomanKind Clydesdale, Biggar Church, Biggar Medical Practice, local businesses and other organisations came together initially to quickly find a way to provide assistance to isolated and vulnerable people in our community. From this initial meeting, Biggar Community Action Group was formed and our services have developed accordingly.

Distress Brief Intervention

Distress Brief Interventions (DBIs) are an innovative way of supporting people in distress. The need to improve the response to people presenting in distress has been strongly advocated by people who have experience of distress and by front line service providers, resulting in the DBI pilot. DBI consists of two parts, with part 1 seeing trained front-line health, police, paramedic and primary care staff help ease any individual. They then ask the person if they would like further support.
